Blue Ridge Tunnel
Inside the Crozet Blue Ridge Tunnel looking west toward Waynesboro, Virginia. Built between 1849 and 1858 at 4,273 feet, it was the longest railroad tunnel on the east coast at the time it was built. It remained in service for 85 years, until bigger locomotives required its replacement in 1944. You can hike from one end to the other on the old railbed, but you'll need a flashlight or headlamp as it is quite dark in the middle of the tunnel!
