Colonial America
Smithfield Spring
Redbud trees in full bloom frame a slave cabin on the Smithfield Plantation in Blacksburg, Virginia. The main house at Smithfield Plantation was completed in 1774 by William and Susanna Preston. The slave cabin, built in 1820, was relocated from another Preston property in Virginia. The Plantation remained in the family until the 1960s, when it was donated to the Preservation Society of Virginia. The house and surrounding grounds have been meticulously restored to their original condition as they would have appeared in colonial times.
