The railroad depot in Thurmond, West Virginia is now a visitor center for the New River National Heritage Area. Built in 1904 by the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad, it was once the epicenter for railroad traffic in the New River gorge, with up to 20 passenger trains a day stopping here. The C&O railroad closed its offices here in 1984 and the National Park Service restored the depot and opened it as a visitor center in 1995. It is truly a time capsule of railroad history.
