Old No 11
Built in 1892, Mathieson Chemical Works No 11 is the only surviving steam locomotive manufactured in the original Roanoke Machine Shops in Roanoke, Virginia. It was originally numbered Norfolk and Western No 305, but was sold to the Mathieson Alkali Corporation, of Saltville, Virginia in 1922. It was used by that company until its retirement in 1961, when it was donated to the town of Saltville, Virginia. It is also the oldest surviving Norfolk and Western steam locomotive. The town of Saltville has done a wonderful job of preserving this historical gem.
