Clocktower Christmas
Lighted snowflakes create a festive winter scene on Beverley Street in downtown Staunton, Virginia! The clocktower building stands tall above the Christmas scene with its lighted clock faces. The clocktower building was designed about 1890 to house the YMCA and the clock was made by the E. Howard Clock Company of Roxbury, Massachusetts; although the original hand-winding mechanism is no longer in place, much of the clock, including its bell, still is original.
After the Y moved to larger quarters in 1914, the Clock Tower was remodeled. The first floor has been used as retail space; F. W. Woolworth was located there for about a half-century, beginning in the 1930s. The Clock Tower is part of the Beverley Historic District, which consists of more than 10 blocks of the downtown area and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
