A cloud-topped Mount St. Helens framed by the devastation of the blast zone from its 1980 violent eruption. It is best known for its major eruption on 18 May 1980, the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in U.S. history. A massive debris avalanche triggered a magnitude 5.1 earthquake that reduced the elevation of the mountain's summit from 9,677 to 8,363 feet leaving a 1 mile horseshoe-shaped crater. This photo was taken 33 years after that devastating eruption and still shows the large amount of ashe and debris thrown out from the volcano. Vegetation is just starting to return to the debris field.
