Virginia Creeper Trail
Virginia Creeper Mile Marker
Mile marker No. 8 on the Virginia Creeper Trail. These mile markers still remain after the rails and ties from the original Virginia Creeper railroad were removed in 1977-1978 to create the hiking / biking trail. They originally marked the distance from the old depot in Abingdon Virginia. The Abingdon branch of the Norfolk and Western railroad ran from Abingdon, Virginia to Elkland (now Todd), North Carolina, a distance of 76 miles.
After the timber ran out, the train ceased running to Elkland and the Abingdon Branch continued running to West Jefferson, North Carolina. Passenger service stopped in 1962 and the last freight train ran in March 1977. The Virginia Creeper trail was then created on the old rail bed from Abingdon, Virginia to the North Carolina state line.
