Located on 34 miles of an abandoned railway right of way in Southwest Virginia, the Virginia Creeper Trail is considered to be one of the most scenic rails to trails in eastern North America. Seventeen miles of the trail, from Whitetop to Damascus, Virginia is a fun downhill ride for thousands of bikers during the season.

Rails That Remain
The last train ran on the Virginia Creeper railroad in March 1977. By the end of the following year all the ties and rails were removed for the conversion of the railroad bed into the Virginia Creeper Trail. Well.... not all of the remnants were removed! This photo was taken on the trail just east of the Alvarado access in April 2021, 44 years after the last train ran on the Abingdon Branch of the Norfolk and Western Railroad.
